Adam Charles Clayton (born 13 March 1960) is an English-born Irish musician best known as the bass guitarist of the rock band U2. He has been a member of the band since its inception in 1976 and has contributed to their 15 studio albums. Clayton's bass playing style is characterized by harmonic syncopation, which provides the music with a driving rhythm. Some of his notable bass lines can be heard in songs like 'Gloria', 'New Year's Day', 'Bullet the Blue Sky', 'With or Without You', 'Mysterious Ways', 'Vertigo', 'Get on Your Boots', and 'Magnificent'. In addition to his work with U2, Clayton has also collaborated on solo projects, including the 1996 version of the 'Theme from Mission: Impossible' with fellow band member Larry Mullen Jr. Clayton has received 22 Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
