Sir Ahmed Salman Rushdie (born June 19, 1947) is an Indian-born British-American novelist. Known for his blend of magic realism and historical fiction, Rushdie explores the connections, disruptions, and migrations between Eastern and Western civilizations, often set on the Indian subcontinent. His second novel, Midnight's Children (1981), won the Booker Prize and has been hailed as the best novel in the prize's history. However, it was his fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), that brought Rushdie international notoriety. The book led to death threats and a fatwa issued by the supreme leader of Iran. Adherents of the fatwa have carried out violent acts, sparking debates about censorship and religiously motivated violence.
