Billy Joe Shaver

Billy Joe Shaver (August 16, 1939 – October 28, 2020) was an American country singer and songwriter. He was a prominent figure in progressive and outlaw country. Born in Corsicana, Texas, Shaver was raised by his mother, Victory Watson Shaver. He developed a love for country music while accompanying his mother to her job at a local nightclub. Shaver left school after the eighth grade to help his uncles pick cotton but occasionally returned for sports. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he worked various jobs, including attempting a career as a rodeo cowboy. Shaver married Brenda Joyce Tindell and they had one son, John Edwin.
