David Michael Letterman (born April 12, 1947) is an American television host, comedian, writer, and producer. He hosted late-night television talk shows for 33 years, starting with the debut of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC in 1982 and ending with the final episode of Late Show with David Letterman on CBS in 2015. With a total of 6,080 episodes, Letterman holds the record for the longest-serving late-night talk show host in American television history, surpassing his mentor Johnny Carson. Letterman is also a successful television and film producer, with his company Worldwide Pants producing shows such as The Late Late Show and the hit sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond.
