Devendra Obi Banhart (born May 30, 1981) is an American-Venezuelan singer-songwriter and visual artist. Born in Texas and raised in Venezuela and California, Banhart dropped out of the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000 to pursue a musical career. He gained recognition with the release of his debut album in 2002 and is best known for his albums in the late 2000s including Cripple Crow and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. In addition to his musical pursuits, Banhart incorporates his interest and training in the visual arts. He was born to a Venezuelan mother and an American father and is named after the Indian religious leader Prem Rawat and the Star Wars character Obi-Wan Kenobi.
