Elaine May Biography
Elaine May (born April 21, 1932) is an American comedian, filmmaker, playwright, and actress. She gained fame in the 1950s for her improvisational comedy routines with Mike Nichols. May transitioned her career as a writer and director, helming several critically acclaimed films. She has received awards such as a BAFTA Award, a Grammy Award, and a Tony Award. May was honored with the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2013 and received an Honorary Academy Award in 2022. As a founding member of the Compass Players, she contributed to the development of improv theater. Alongside Nichols, she formed the stage act Nichols and May, performing in clubs, on Broadway, and on TV and radio broadcasts.
