Steven Siro Vai, born June 6, 1960, is an American guitarist, songwriter, and producer. He started his music career in 1978 as a transcriptionist for Frank Zappa and joined Zappa's band from 1980 to 1983. Vai has released eight solo albums and has won three Grammy Awards. He has worked with Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, Public Image Ltd, Mary J. Blige, Spinal Tap, Alice Cooper, Motörhead, and Polyphia. Known for his individualistic playing style, Vai is considered a prominent figure in the heavy rock and metal scene of the 1980s. He has also been part of live-only acts like G3, Zappa Plays Zappa, and the Experience Hendrix Tour.
