Born in San Francisco and raised in New York, Whitman relocated to Los Angeles at the age of 12. After serving in the U.S. Army, he began studying acting and appearing in plays. In the early 1950s, Whitman had bit parts in films such as When Worlds Collide (1951) and The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). He also made guest appearances on television shows like Dr. Christian and The Roy Rogers Show. Whitman's breakout role came in John H. Auer's Johnny Trouble (1957). He later became a part of 20th Century Fox's star-building program and starred in films like Darby's Rangers (1958) and The Sound and the Fury (1959). Throughout his career, Whitman appeared in numerous movies and TV shows, showcasing his talent as a versatile actor.
