Abigail Smith

Abigail Smith is a professor in marine sciences at Otago University in Dunedin. She grew up in Maine and completed her undergraduate studies at Colby College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Smith then moved to New Zealand to pursue a PhD at Waikato University, focusing on the sedimentology of New Zealand bryozoans and mixed carbonate-clastic deposits. Her research centers around the formation of marine micro-flora skeletons and their deposition as sediment on the seafloor. In 2019, Smith was honored with the Miriam Dell Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring by the Association for Women in Science. Notable students mentored by Smith include Tuifuisaʻa Patila Amosa.
