Al Hirt Biography
Al Hirt (1922-1999) was an American trumpeter and bandleader, best known for his million-selling recordings of 'Java' and the album 'Honey in the Horn' (1963). He gained further recognition for composing the theme music to the television series 'The Green Hornet.' Hirt earned the nicknames 'Jumbo' and 'The Round Mound of Sound.' Throughout his career, he recorded extensively for RCA Victor and received the moniker 'The King.' Hirt was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2009 and received 21 Grammy nominations, winning the award in 1964 for his rendition of 'Java.' Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Hirt began playing the trumpet at the age of six and later played in the Junior Police Band.
