Alan Richard Michaels (born November 12, 1944) is an American television sportscaster known for his extensive career in network sports television. Currently, Michaels serves as the play-by-play announcer for Thursday Night Football on Prime Video and holds an emeritus role for NBC Sports. He has been part of the sports broadcasting industry since 1971, primarily with ABC Sports for nearly three decades (1976–2006) and later with NBC Sports. Michaels is renowned for his play-by-play commentary of National Football League (NFL) games, including his iconic tenure on ABC Monday Night Football from 1986 to 2005 and NBC Sunday Night Football from 2006 to 2021. His memorable calls extend beyond football, notably the Miracle on Ice at the 1980 Winter Olympics and the earthquake-interrupted Game 3 of the 1989 World Series. Michaels was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jay Leonard Michaels and Lila Roginsky/Ross, and grew up as a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. In 1958, his family relocated to Los Angeles, coinciding with the Dodgers' move. He completed his education at Arizona State University, where he began his broadcasting career.
