Alan Arthur Johnson (born 17 May 1950) is a British politician who has served in various high-profile roles. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle from 1997 to 2017. Johnson's political career includes serving as Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Secretary of State for Health, Home Secretary, and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was a member of the Labour Party and served in the Cabinets of both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Prior to his political career, Johnson held positions such as Minister of State for Universities, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, and President of the Board of Trade. In 2023, he was announced as the next Chancellor of the University of Hull, succeeding Virginia Bottomley.
