Alonzo Mourning Biography
Alonzo Harding Mourning Jr. (born February 8, 1970) is an American former professional basketball player. He played most of his 15-year NBA career as a center for the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornets, and New Jersey Nets. Known as 'Zo', Mourning was renowned for his tenacity on defense and was awarded the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award twice. He was also named to the NBA All-Defensive Team on two occasions. Mourning made a remarkable comeback after undergoing a kidney transplant and went on to win the 2006 NBA championship with the Heat. In addition to his playing career, Mourning currently serves as the vice president of player programs and development for the Miami Heat. He has been honored with the retirement of his number by the Miami Heat and has been inducted into both the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
