Angela Yvonne Davis is an American revolutionary Marxist and feminist political activist, philosopher, academic, and author. She is currently a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Davis was born in Birmingham, Alabama and studied at Brandeis University, the University of Frankfurt, and the University of California, San Diego. She completed her doctorate at the University of Berlin in East Germany. Davis was a longtime member of the Communist Party USA and a founding member of the Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. She has been active in various movements such as the Occupy movement and the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign. Davis has also been involved in the second-wave feminist movement and the campaign against the Vietnam War.
