    Anne Moody (September 15, 1940 – February 5, 2015) was an American author known for her writings about her experiences growing up poor and black in rural Mississippi and her involvement in the Civil Rights Movement. Born Essie Mae Moody on September 15, 1940, she was the oldest of eight children. Moody fought against racism and segregation from a young age, working for white families in the area while earning perfect grades in school. After graduating with honors from a segregated, all-black high school, she attended Natchez Junior College. Moody's influential memoir, 'Coming of Age in Mississippi,' published in 1968, sheds light on the realities of racism and her journey towards activism.
