Barbara Kopple (born July 30, 1946) is an American film director known for her pioneering work in documentary filmmaking. She is credited with bringing the historic French cinema vérité style to a modern American audience. Kopple has won two Academy Awards for Best Documentary, for her films Harlan County, USA (1977) and American Dream (1991). She is the first woman to have won twice in this category. Known for her impactful storytelling, Kopple gained acclaim for her film Bearing Witness (2005), a documentary about women journalists in combat zones during the Iraq War. She has also directed notable documentaries such as Wild Man Blues (1997), A Conversation With Gregory Peck (1999), My Generation (2000), Running from Crazy (2013), and Miss Sharon Jones! (2015). Kopple will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2023.
