Smith was born in Huntington, West Virginia, and is a graduate of Marshall University with a degree in journalism. He started his career in the comic book industry as a letterhack and eventually became a professional writer. Smith's first published work was for Eclipse Comics in 1985, where he wrote backup features for the Scout comic and collaborated on 'The Dogs of Danger' in 'The Swords of Texas.' Beau Smith has made significant contributions to the comic book world throughout his career.
