Benjamin Fernandez (February 24, 1925 – April 25, 2000) was an American politician, financial consultant, and special ambassador. He was a member of the Republican Party and ran for President of the United States three times. Fernandez was the first major-party presidential contender of Hispanic origin. Born in Kansas to Mexican parents, he served in World War II and later had a successful business career. Fernandez co-founded the Republican National Hispanic Council and raised funds for Republican candidates, starting with President Richard Nixon in 1972. In 1973, he was appointed U.S. Special Envoy to Paraguay. Fernandez's contributions have made him a notable figure in American politics.
