Brendan Cowell is an Australian actor and writer. He was born in Sydney and raised in the beachside suburb of Cronulla. Cowell attended Charles Sturt University in Bathurst, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre/Media. He has achieved recognition for his work as a playwright, winning the Patrick White Playwrights' Award for his play Bed, among other accolades. Cowell's play Ruben Guthrie enjoyed a successful run at the Belvoir St Theatre in 2009 and was later produced at La Boite Theatre in 2011. As an actor, he gained acclaim for his portrayal of Hamlet in Bell Shakespeare's 2008 production and appeared in Sydney Theatre Company's True West in 2010.
