Brian Barry (7 August 1936 – 10 March 2009) was a renowned moral and political philosopher. He completed his education at the Queen's College, Oxford, earning a B.A. and D.Phil., learning under the guidance of H. L. A. Hart. Barry is credited, alongside David Braybrooke, Richard E. Flathman, Felix Oppenheim, and Abraham Kaplan, with merging analytic philosophy and political science. He also merged political theory and social choice theory and was a vocal critic of public choice theory. Throughout his career, Barry held teaching positions at various universities including University of Birmingham, Keele University, University of Southampton, and Essex University. He served as Lieber Professor Emeritus of Political Philosophy at Columbia University and Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the London School of Economics. Barry was honored with the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science.
