Bryan Jay Singer (born September 17, 1965) is an American filmmaker and founder of Bad Hat Harry Productions. He gained recognition for his directorial debut, Lion's Den (1988), and received financing for Public Access (1993), co-winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. Singer's notable works include the neo-noir crime thriller The Usual Suspects (1995) and the Stephen King adaptation Apt Pupil (1998). In the 2000s, he directed popular superhero films like X-Men (2000) and its sequel X2 (2003), earning him the 2000 Saturn Award for Best Direction. Singer also directed Superman Returns (2006) and Valkyrie (2008), a World War II historical thriller.
