Calvin Edwin Ripken Jr., born on August 24, 1960, is an American former baseball shortstop and third baseman. Known as 'the Iron Man,' Ripken played his entire 21-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Baltimore Orioles from 1981 to 2001. He was one of the most productive offensive players in his position, accumulating 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, and 1,695 runs batted in. Ripken also won two Gold Glove Awards for his exceptional defense. He was selected for the All-Star Game 19 times and was twice named the American League Most Valuable Player. Ripken holds the record for consecutive games played, with 2,632, surpassing Lou Gehrig's 56-year-old record. In 2007, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame with an impressive 98.53% of votes.
