Carl Jean Johnson (July 2, 1929 – December 29, 1988) was a public health physician known for his opposition to nuclear testing. Born in Sims, Indiana, on July 2, 1929, Carl Johnson overcame childhood tuberculosis, which stunted his growth. He dedicated himself to weightlifting and proper eating habits, overcoming his physical weakness. In his later life, he had to undergo cyst removal due to tuberculosis infection. Carl married Kathryn Van Deusen, daughter of Emmett Peter Van Deusen I and Margaret McKenzie Barton. Johnson served in the United States Army starting on July 3, 1946. Although his career focused on public health, he is also known for his activism against nuclear testing.
