Carol Moseley Braun, also known as Carol Elizabeth Moseley Braun or Moseley-Braun, is a former U.S. Senator, diplomat, politician, and lawyer. Born on August 16, 1947, she represented Illinois in the United States Senate from 1993 to 1999. Before her Senate career, Moseley Braun served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1979 to 1988 and as Cook County Recorder of Deeds from 1988 to 1992. She won the U.S. Senate seat in 1992 by defeating Senator Alan J. Dixon in the Democratic primary. After her Senate term, Moseley Braun was appointed as the United States Ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa from 1999 to 2001. She briefly ran for the Democratic nomination in the 2004 U.S. presidential election and campaigned for mayor of Chicago in 2010.
