Carolyn Rae Miller is an American professor and researcher known for her contributions to the field of rhetoric and technical communication. Born in 1945 in Boston, MA, Miller served as the SAS Institute Distinguished Professor of Rhetoric and Technical Communication Emerita at North Carolina State University. She received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the Rigo Award for Lifetime Achievement in Communication Design from ACM-SIGDOC in 2006 and the Cheryl Geisler Award for Outstanding Mentor from the Rhetoric Society of America in 2016. Miller is a Fellow of the Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and the Rhetoric Society of America. Her work on 'Genre as Social Action' is considered foundational in Rhetorical Genre Studies.
