Carroll O'Connor Biography
John Carroll O'Connor (August2, 1924– June21, 2001) was an American actor known for his television career spanning over four decades. He achieved widespread fame for his portrayal of Archie Bunker in the CBS sitcoms All in the Family (1971–1979) and its continuation, Archie Bunker's Place (1979–1983), winning four Emmy Awards for his performance. O'Connor also starred as police chief William 'Bill' Gillespie in the crime drama In the Heat of the Night (1988–1995) and appeared as Gus Stemple in Mad About You. He received numerous awards during his career, including five Emmys and two Golden Globe Awards. O'Connor was born on August2, 1924, in Manhattan, New York City.
