Charles Rolland Douglass (January 2, 1910 – April 8, 2003) was a Mexican-born American sound engineer, known for his invention of the laugh track. Born in Guadalajara, Mexico to an American family, Douglass later moved to Nevada and graduated from the University of Nevada with a degree in electrical engineering. He joined CBS Radio in Los Angeles as a sound engineer and also served in the Navy during World War II, working on shipboard radar systems. In the early days of television, Douglass observed the need for consistent audience reactions in comedic programs and devised the laugh track to recreate the atmosphere of live comedy performances. His contribution revolutionized the way comedy was presented on television.
