Charles Dumas

Charles Everett "Charlie" Dumas (February 12, 1937 – January 5, 2004) was an American high jumper. He became the 1956 Olympic champion and was the first person to clear 7 ft. (2.13 m) in the high jump. Dumas achieved this historic jump on June 29, 1956, during the US Olympic Trials in Los Angeles. His success not only secured his spot on the American Olympic team but also made him the favorite to win the gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, where he set a new Olympic record. Dumas later attended the University of Southern California, winning the NCAA track and field title in 1958.
