Chinonye Chukwu (born May 19, 1985) is a Nigerian-American film director, known for her work in drama films such as Clemency and Till. She made history as the first African-American woman to win the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Chukwu was born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and moved to Oklahoma with her family when she was a year old. They later settled in Fairbanks, Alaska, while frequently visiting Nigeria. Growing up as the only African-American in her classes, Chukwu struggled to fit in but found solace in reading Maya Angelou and lifting weights. She nurtured her passion for filmmaking from a young age, jotting down ideas for movies and music videos in her journal.
