Colson Whitehead, born Arch Colson Chipp Whitehead on November 6, 1969, is an American novelist, acclaimed for his works in fiction and nonfiction. With nine novels under his belt, Whitehead gained recognition for his debut novel, The Intuitionist, in 1999. However, his breakthrough came in 2016 with The Underground Railroad, which won him the prestigious National Book Award for Fiction and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2017. Whitehead's success continued with his novel, The Nickel Boys, earning him another Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2020. Alongside his fiction, Whitehead has published two books of nonfiction. Born and raised in New York City, he attended Trinity School and graduated from Harvard University in 1991.
