Daniel Hoffman Biography
Daniel Gerard Hoffman (April 3, 1923 – March 30, 2013) was an American poet, essayist, and academic. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and later earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Columbia University. Hoffman was appointed the twenty-second Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1973. He published his first collection of poetry, 'An Armada of Thirty Whales,' in 1954, which was selected by W. H. Auden for the Yale Series of Younger Poets. Throughout his career, Hoffman published ten additional collections of poetry, a memoir, and seven volumes of criticism.
