Dave Carter (August 13, 1952 – July 19, 2002) was an American folk music singer-songwriter. He gained recognition as one half of the duo Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. Carter's style was characterized as 'post-modern mythic American folk music.' The duo was hailed as the new voice of modern folk music before Carter's sudden passing in 2002. Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer ranked number one on the year-end list for 'Top Artists' on the Folk Music Radio Airplay Chart in 2001 and 2002. Even after his death, Carter's songs continue to be popular for their poetic imagery, spirituality, and storytelling. Joan Baez, who toured with the duo in 2002, praised Carter's songwriting as a special gift that is also found in Bob Dylan's songs.
