David Carpenter Biography
David Joseph Carpenter (born May 6, 1930) is an American serial killer and serial rapist known as The Trailside Killer. He gained notoriety for stalking and murdering individuals on hiking trails in state parks near San Francisco, California. Carpenter attacked at least ten people, resulting in seven convictions for murder. He is also suspected in two additional killings. Survivors include Steven Haertle and Lois Rinna, mother of television personality Lisa Rinna. Carpenter primarily used a .38 caliber handgun, except for one killing where a .44 caliber handgun was used. Carpenter's troubled childhood included physical abuse, a stutter, and cruelty to animals. He was incarcerated at age 13 for molesting two cousins.
