David Lowenthal

David Lowenthal (26 April 1923 – 15 September 2018) was an American historian and geographer, known for his contributions to the field of heritage studies. He was born in New York City to Max Lowenthal and Eleanor Mack, and had siblings John Lowenthal and Betty Levin. Lowenthal attended the Lincoln School in New York and later graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in history from Harvard University in 1944. He pursued a Master of Arts degree in geography at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in the Guianas. Lowenthal eventually earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Throughout his career, he played a significant role in establishing heritage studies as a distinct discipline.
