David Gaub McCullough (July 7, 1933 – August 7, 2022) was an American popular historian known for his insightful works on various historical figures and events. He was a two-time Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner, receiving recognition for his meticulously researched books. McCullough attended Yale University, where he earned a degree in English literature. Throughout his career, he authored ten books, including notable works on Harry S. Truman, John Adams, Theodore Roosevelt, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Panama Canal, and the Wright brothers. In addition to his writing, McCullough lent his distinct voice to narrate documentaries like Ken Burns' The Civil War and hosted the PBS television series American Experience for twelve years. His books Truman and John Adams were adapted into television films by HBO.
