Deacon John Moore, better known as Deacon John, is a blues, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll musician, singer, actor, and bandleader. Born on June 23, 1941, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Deacon John earned his nickname from one of his band members. Despite initial reservations, he decided to keep the name and has been known as Deacon John ever since. Growing up in New Orleans' 8th Ward, he is the brother of Creole scholar Sybil Kein and a cradle Catholic. Deacon John has been active on the New Orleans R&B scene since his teens, playing guitar and serving as a session man on hit recordings by artists like Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, and Lee Dorsey. His band, The Ivories, gained a dedicated following, often outshining visiting national acts.
