Douglas Roberts Biography
Philip Douglas Roberts (1919–1976) was a South Australian painter and art critic. Born in Kadina, South Australia, he was the youngest son of Albert John Roberts and Sarah Roberts. Roberts trained as a teacher and became a senior lecturer at the South Australian School of Arts, eventually becoming the principal. He was a regular art critic for various South Australian newspapers. Additionally, Roberts was a founding member of the South Australian branch of the Contemporary Art Society. Some of his paintings are held at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Roberts married Vera Piggott Southwell in 1947.
