Douglas Wilmer (8 January 1920 – 31 March 2016) was an English actor, best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the 1965 TV series Sherlock Holmes. Born in Brentford, Middlesex, he received his education at King's School, Canterbury, and Stonyhurst College. Wilmer's acting talent was recognized when Dame Sybil Thorndike saw him perform as the Archbishop of Canterbury in a school play. He was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and trained there until he was conscripted into the British Army for military service in World War II. After serving in Africa with the Royal West African Frontier Force, he was invalided out due to tuberculosis. Wilmer had a successful career in film and television, with notable roles in various other productions.
