He is known for his genre-blending sound, incorporating elements of pop, British rock, soul, funk, reggae, electronic music, African polyrhythms, and Latin music such as samba. Grant was a founding member of the Equals, a racially mixed pop group in the UK, best known for their chart-topping hit 'Baby, Come Back.' In his solo career, he achieved international success with songs like 'I Don't Wanna Dance' (1982) and 'Electric Avenue' (1983), which earned him a Grammy Award nomination. Grant is also recognized for his anti-apartheid song 'Gimme Hope Jo'anna' (1988).
