Mary Elizabeth Alexander Dole, born on July 29, 1936, is an American attorney, author, and politician who served as a United States Senator from North Carolina from 2003 to 2009. She is a member of the Republican Party and has an extensive political career, having served in five presidential administrations, including as U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President Ronald Reagan from 1983 to 1987, and as U.S. Secretary of Labor under President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1990. Dole also held the position of president of the American Red Cross from 1991 to 1999. She graduated from Duke University in 1958 and earned a Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1965.
