Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (born Ellen Eugenia Johnson, 29 October 1938) is a Liberian politician who served as the 24th president of Liberia from 2006 to 2018. She was the first elected female head of state in Africa. Born in Monrovia, Sirleaf was educated at the College of West Africa and furthered her studies in the United States, attending Madison Business College, the University of Colorado Boulder, and Harvard University. She began her political career in Liberia, working in the government and holding positions such as Deputy Minister of Finance and Minister of Finance. During the regime of Samuel Doe, she fled to the United States, where she worked in banking. Sirleaf later returned to Liberia and successfully contested a senatorial seat.
