Elliott West Biography
Elliott West (born April 19, 1945) is an American historian and author known for his expertise in the history of the American West. Growing up in a family of journalists, West followed in their footsteps and received an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. However, his passion for history led him to pursue further education, completing master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Colorado. Throughout his career, West has taught at various universities including the University of Colorado Denver, the University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of New Mexico. Currently, he serves as an Alumni Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Arkansas. Renowned historian Richard White has praised West as the best historian of the American West writing today. One of his notable works includes the 1998 book, The Contested Plains: Indians, Goldseekers, and the Rush to Colorado.
