Elsa Lanchester Biography
Elsa Lanchester (28 October 1902 – 26 December 1986) was a British actress known for her long career in theatre, film, and television. She began her career in the arts as a dancer and later transitioned to performing in theatre and cabaret. Lanchester gained recognition for her role as Anne of Cleves in the British film The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), in which she starred alongside her husband, Charles Laughton. Her success in British films led to opportunities in Hollywood, where she played supporting roles. However, it was her portrayal of the title character in Bride of Frankenstein (1935) that brought her widespread acclaim. Lanchester received critical praise for her performances in films such as Passport to Destiny (1944), Come to the Stable (1949), and Witness for the Prosecution (1957), which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
