Eric Ellsworth Hipple (born September 16, 1957) is a former professional American football player and a public speaker. Born in Lubbock, Texas, Hipple attended Utah State University on an athletic scholarship where he excelled as a star quarterback for the team. He was selected by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round of the 1980 NFL Draft and played his entire 10-season NFL career with the Lions from 1980 to 1989. Throughout his career, Hipple played in 102 games, completing 830 passes for 10,711 yards and 55 touchdowns. Since the tragic suicide of his 15-year-old son in 2000, Hipple has been actively involved in raising awareness about depression and mental illness, delivering speeches on suicide prevention at various institutions and organizations.
