Eugene Joseph Wright (May 29, 1923 – December 30, 2020) was an American jazz bassist known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. He began his musical journey as a cornetist in high school and later led his own band, the 16-piece Dukes of Swing. Although largely self-taught on bass, he sought private instruction from notable bassists such as Paul Gregory. Wright gained prominence during the swing era, performing with renowned bandleaders like Count Basie and Erroll Garner. He showcased his versatility by collaborating with artists in bebop, including Charlie Parker and Sonny Stitt, as well as Latin jazz with Cal Tjader. Throughout his career, Wright worked with various musicians and appeared in film shorts alongside Charlie Barnet.
