Born in Paris to Sephardic Jewish parents and raised in Lima, Peru, Calvo-Roth emigrated to the United States in 1952. She studied journalism at the University of Missouri before returning to Peru to pursue a writing career. Calvo-Roth faced discrimination as a woman in the newsroom but persevered, eventually becoming a prominent journalist. She worked as the New York correspondent for Vision, a Latin American magazine, for 12 years, and also served as the editor of the Brazil edition. Calvo-Roth's contributions to journalism and her determination to succeed have made her a respected figure in the industry.
