Frank Noel
Frank E. 'Pappy' Noel (February 12, 1905 – November 29, 1966) was an Associated Press photographer and the winner of the 1943 Pulitzer Prize for Photography. Born as Francis Evans Noel in Dalhart, Texas, Noel began his photography career at the Chicago Daily News in 1925. He served in the United States Army Air Corps as an Aerial Photography Instructor and worked for various newspapers including the Washington Post, Wichita Eagle, Kansas City Star, and the Oklahoma City News. Joining the Associated Press in 1937, Noel spent the majority of his career with the agency. During World War II, he worked in the Pacific Theater, surviving a harrowing ordeal when his lifeboat was adrift in the Indian Ocean for three days.
