Gabriel Brown Biography
Gabriel Brown (1910–1972) was an American Piedmont blues singer and guitarist. Born in Florida, possibly in Gadsden County, Brown graduated from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1934, he performed at the first National Folk Festival in St. Louis, Missouri, where he was discovered by folklorist Zora Neale Hurston. Brown was recorded by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in June 1935. He later moved to New York City, where he had a role in Zora Neale Hurston's light opera Polk County and worked with the Federal Arts Theatre. Brown also found employment with the civil service and had his first full recording session in 1943, produced by Joe Davis.
