Garry Trudeau, born Garretson Beekman Trudeau on July 21, 1948, is an American cartoonist and creator of the Doonesbury comic strip. He is also known as the executive producer and creator of the political comedy series Alpha House on Amazon Studios. Trudeau was born in New York City and has a diverse ancestry including French Canadian, English, Dutch, German, and Swedish. He comes from a family with a rich history in healthcare, as his great-grandfather, Edward Livingston Trudeau, created the Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium for tuberculosis treatment. Trudeau attended St. Paul's School and later Yale University as an art major. While initially focusing on painting, he eventually shifted his focus to cartooning and found great success with Doonesbury.
