George Steeves (b. ca. 1945) is a Canadian art photographer known for his highly personal and figurative work. Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, he studied engineering at Carleton University and Cornell University. Steeves worked as an engineer with the Bedford Institute of Oceanography until his retirement in 2006. He has been living in Halifax, Nova Scotia since 1973. Steeves began his photography career in the 1970s, focusing on urban landscapes. Inspired by performance artist Ellen Pierce, he shifted his focus to figurative work in 1981. Known for getting to know his subjects deeply, he spends more time conversing than photographing. Steeves is recognized as one of the foremost figures in contemporary Canadian photography.
